Best beaches in Corralejo: Discover Hidden Gems

Welcome to my Best beaches in Corralejo guide.

Corralejo is the liveliest town in northern Fuerteventura, full of surfers, digital nomads, and people who came for a week and stayed a month.

Most visitors spend their beach time on the famous Grandes Playas, the long stretch of dunes meeting turquoise water that you’ve probably already seen in every photo.

Those beaches are genuinely beautiful. But they’re also not the whole story. Within cycling distance of the city centre there are beaches that barely appear on Google Maps, a bay so remote it feels like a different island entirely, and a fifteen-minute ferry ride that takes you somewhere most Corralejo visitors never think to go.

This is the guide to all of them, based on two trips to the north of Fuerteventura and written for the kind of traveller who wants to know which beach suits them, not just which one is most famous.

Small Popcorn Beach

best beaches in Corralejo

Located almost in the city centre, this is the real popcorn beach for me.

Google refers sometimes to the beach outside of the city reachable via dirt road, as Popcorn beach, many travellers get confused. Whereas, there is nothing available at this beach, and normally I would recommend this type of experience, I found the other beach better.

See why.

Firstly, this one has a lounge bar with with affordable drinks and relaxed vibe. There is also a public bathroom in this bar. So its not officially public, but the guys at the bar are so great, that anytime I ask if I can use the bathroom, they smile and say sure.

So, we can assume its (sort of) public bathroom.

Secondly, there is enough room to lay down, easy entry to the ocean, but only stones at the shore and almost no wind.

Contrary to the side of the first beach, which is located exactly where the surfers go, this is sort of bay, surrounded by enough wind protection.

Lastly, thanks to its location, you can walk to supermarket, or catch the bus to the other beaches. Bus stop is 5 minutes walking. Also, there is a beautiful and unobstructed view on Lobos Island.

Insider Tip: The name Popcorn beach came because of the little pebbles that are white and remind popcorn. While visually attractive, this means that the biggest part of the beach has pebbles, which isn’t comfortable as sand. The last one means, you might want to stay only a couple of hours rather than the whole day.

Unexpectedly Hidden Secret: Playa Alzada

best beaches in Corralejo

One of the last beaches of Corralejo shore, this beach is reachable by car, or bike.

Not with the bus, as the last bus stop is the one at Hotel Riu. If you don’t have a car, biking from the end of the Corralejo city takes approximately, 20 minutes.

Once at the beach, you can enjoy beautiful water, soft sand, and the vicinity of the Dunes just across the road.

While not super big, it offers plenty of space for your towel, or picnic.

There is also a lifeguard present at the beach(observe its flag for swimming conditions), but not a public bathroom. Even though the beach is next to the road, the noise of the traffic isn’t loud enough to disturb you.

Additionally, there is Montana Roja.

In case you feel like hiking, this is your spot.

Amazing views are awaiting.

It’s around 40 minutes uphill and 20 minutes downhill. Be prepared for strong winds while at the top.

Luckily, it is nothing unsafe.

Playita del Poris

For those who crave a real crowd getaway, this is your spot.

In case Playa Alzada feels still too crowded, walk 10 minutes to the right.

While there isn’t a path, the sandy hills allow you to cross the short distance between those two beaches easily.

Once there, you can enjoy a little bay, ideal for swimming or sunbathing. I visited this beach twice, and once I was alone, and second time there were maybe 10 other people.

What stands out to me is the complete remoteness of this place. It feels like you are far away from civilisation . Whereas in reality you are just 10 kms away from city.

If you are lucky, you will have the beach for yourself.

Playa del Viejo

best beaches in Corralejo

This is a beach located at the end of Playa del Medano, or as locals call it, the Flag Beach (thanks to its kite surf activities).

It is right below Hotel Riu, which is one of the two only tall hotels in northern Fuerteventura.

You can reach the beach walking (1 hour from Corralejo), by car or bike and also by bus.

As it is located on the bus line from Corralejo to Puerto del Rosario, you could see it on the way from the airport.

While you might think, huh, a peaceful beach next to the hotel?

It is true.

To this moment, I don’t know how it is possible that this beach is almost always uncrowded.

While, if you walk either side there is the Grandes Playas Corralejo and those are always more occupied, but this piece stays uncrowded paradise.

In addition to a lot of space, you have a beautiful view of Lobos island.

Free public bathroom located behind the Riu Hotel next to the Beach Volleyball pitch, as well as snack bar.

Playa de la Caleta: Hidden Gem On The Lobos Island

best beaches in Corralejo

While this beach being on the Lobos Island and therefore geographically does belong to Fuerteventura, it is only 15 minutes ferry ride from Corralejo.

That’s why I decided to include this beach in the best beaches in Corralejo article.

You can reach lobos in 5-10 minutes with water taxi(small bait up to 7 passengers).

Next to this option, there is a standard slower ferry in about 20 minutes.

Once when you reached the island, turn right and walk about 5 minutes to reach the Caleta beach. It s bay shaped, sandy beach with 2-3 stone made wind protectors. The water is beautifully greenish, and there are almost no waves, making this spot perfect for everyone.

As the Lobos island counts only a few permanent residents, it is by its nature remote place. So even though the Caleta beach is the biggest one on the island, it doesn’t feel crowded.

There is public bathroom located in the port, 5 minutes walking from the beach. While there is a restaurant located 10 minutes walking from the beach, there is not supermarket on the island, so be prepared and consider to pack your drinks and lunch in Corralejo.

Insider tip: Even though, some local guides will try to sell you the snorkelling experience and recommend this beach is a heaven for the snorkelling, from my experience, this is not extraordinarily good snorkelling spot. I have collected my assuming after reviews of around 10 people who visited this spot, snorkelled there at different times, but all were disappointed.
