South Fuerteventura Beaches: Sotavento Isn’t The Best

If you are searching for best Fuerteventura beaches and you are considering south of the island as your base, I got you covered.

While everyone heads to Sotavento, the pictures are everywhere , the sandbar that appears at low tide, the kitesurf sails catching the wind, the turquoise water stretching toward the horizon.

It’s a real beach and worth visiting.

But I avoided it for an entire trip because I assumed it would be overcrowded and overrated.

When I finally went, our host, a local cool guy named Joaquin changed how I saw it entirely. Simply by showing me a different entrance most people never use.

One important note:his guide covers east coast beaches only. The west coast of southern Fuerteventura has strong currents that make swimming dangerous, you can visit, but don’t go in the water. Everything below is a beach where you can actually swim. As I focus on beaches where you can also jump in the water an ocean the ocean, I omitted this beaches in my guide.

Sotavento Beach:Not Only Watersport Paradise

Watersport heaven.

You most likely saw this beach in pictures. During the slow tide, there is a sand plateau that magnificently divides the sea. It is one of the most famous and most sought after beaches.

As I do prefer hidden, uncrowded beaches, I did not visit this beach up until my last stay.

While being popular, I was easily surprised that it wasn’t that crowded. There is not public bathroom though.

This is thanks to its size. Important is to know, that the sunbathing isn’t easy here to the wind.

Well, the surfers and kitesurfer do love it here for a reason, right?

There is a solution for nice beach day though.

After a recommendation from Joaquin, the local and owner of the place we slept during our Christmas getaway, we entered the beach from mirador del Salmo. This part of the beach carries the same name, Playa de Salmo, but it belongs to Sotavento beach and you can walk to it from one side to another.

If you want the remote experience, and fantastic (sunset) picture, choose the same entry point.

Insider Tip: Try to arrive not too late, as you might have difficulties finding a parking space, and the road is a bit steep (although it is also offroad, we went there with standard rental, because it is just couple of meters)

If you want to stay at quite site, you can spend the day at the Playa del Salmo, which is part of the Sotavento beach ,but without the waves, therefore without kite surfers. We spend there the the last day of 2025 and were surrounded by camper owners. Also, thanks to its easy ocean entry, there were some families with kids, but the vibe remained relaxed and quit. One thin though, there isn’t public bathroom, nor lifeguard at this side of the beach.

Las Playitas :Sheltered one

Fuerteventura beaches

Located between two mountains, this is a perfect spot for when it is windy on the east coast. As you know the wind being quite a beach blocker, this is an important attribute.

Next to being sheltered, this remote beach has a black sand ,making it quite unique even among Fuerteventura beaches.

So, if you want a different experience than the sandy beaches, this is your place.

In addition to being sheltered, and with black sand, this beach is a bit hidden and offbeaten track. I like it, but some might not. While being not famous, there is a public bathroom on the side.

However, to get there is still doable even with the bus.
(Funny enough, we found this beach by coincidence on the wayin the bus to the Sotavento beach).

Insider Tip: You can take the bus from Puerto del Rosario on the way to Morro Jable. Bus number 1 and the bus stop is next to the football stadium. The journey is one hour. With the car, it will take you 45 minutes.

This beach is close to the Gran Tarajal. Local place with more shops, restaurants, and another black sand beach. Should you like to combine remote place with vibrant city, you can choose this location as your base while in south Fuerteventura

Playa del Matorral: Wide open

Fuerteventura beaches

Located in Morro Jable, the last holiday resort of Fuerteventura, this beach is probably the longest one.

While very popular, you will always find an uncrowded spot.

You might walk for it (what can be more beautiful than beach promenade though?), but you will find one. At its southernmost part, there is little church uphill, that offers an amazing view of almost the entire beach. We were going there to enjoy the take away breakfasts as well, as peaceful sundowns. Recommend it for both.

Just below this little hill there is a first class fish restaurant. If you continue walking towards the lighthouse, you can choose the pavement or beach.

In both cases, you will be blown away, by the colours of the sea. To this day, this is one of my most favourite beach on south Fuerteventura.

There is public bathroom, sport pitches, and beautiful reserve side at the lighthouse part of the beach.

Insider Tip: Choose Morro Jable as your base, if you like to be in the city like environment. Next to Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario, belongs Morro Jable to the 3 biggest cities on Fuerteventura. Morro Jable has restaurants, shops, and bigger hotels. While mainly touristic, there is also local community, that makes the stay still local. Even though compare to North of the island, you will feel here the touristic vibe a bit more.

Esquinzo Beach: Caribbean Like Heaven

Fuerteventura beaches

Natural extension of Playa del Matorral, it can be reached with bus from Morro Jable (10 minutes ride) or car, bike ride (its quit hilly so, unless you are sporty biker, won’t recommend this option).

Not to confuse with Esquinzo beach in north Fuerteventura.

Mesmerising Caribbean-like water, plenty of space, and restaurants with breathtaking views. This is how I remember the beach, so choose it for your day out, if you want the same.

It looks a bit like little sister of Matorral beach, however, the little village where the beach is located is very quiet compare to Morro Jable.

Even though this beach feels remote, there is a public bathroom present, as well as lifeguard and the stone made wind protectors. Those attributes makes Esquinzo beach one of the most complex Fuerteventura beaches in the south of the island.

Insider tip: Choose this village if you want to have quiet base close to bus stop for discover the rest of the island, Jandia national park with some beautiful hiking trials or mountains
